Darwin: Sweetheart & Friends

Sweetheart is the name of a massive 780kg, 5.1m long crocodile who can be found in the excellent Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Sweetheart was captured in 1979 when he became very good at turning over tinnies (small local fishing boats) and although he never killed anyone the authorities decided to catch him and start a breeding program at a local farm. Unfortunately Sweetheart drowned during the capture attempt, but his impressive body has been well preserved and is one of the main attractions at the museum. You can't take photos in the museum, but 5.1m is LONG. I have managed to take some photos of his other friends in the territory and no matter how many crocs I see my heart is always in my mouth when I see one.

I visited a jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River, where the "wild" crocs are well trained to chase after the boat like cruise missiles waiting for the pork dangled on rods and then jump from the water. It is a very scary experience - these animals are killing machines and they come right up against the boat (you are instructed NOT to out your arms or legs, or head, over the edge of the boat at ANY time - reassuring).

No front legs on this one, lost (carelessly) in a fight over territory.

And these ones really were wild crocs.... These crocs were in Arnhem Land, East of Kakadu National Park.

I can't pretend that I felt 100% safe in these ex-army boats, especially after meeting Sweetheart.
