Halong Bay

Halong Bay is a bumpy 4 hour bus ride from Hanoi to the coast, but it is well worth the journey. This world heritage site is a collection of over 2,000 limestone islands within the Gulf of Tonkin, which is said to have been created when a dragon flew down from the mountains and gouged out the fantastic surrounding landscape before landing in the sea.

I was lucky to have picked a good ship from the many that offer cruises around the bay, as we didn't encounter that many other ships during our overnight cruise. The bay is stunning and we were served sensational food throughout the trip.

We stopped off to see one of the hundreds of caves, this one was lit and accessible (most are not).

Then we relaxed on the beach, swam in the beautifully warm water and also did some kayaking.

The next day we were able to visit a local floating village (as the people are not allowed to live on the land any more due to the UNESCO protection) in the traditional basket boats.

It was a beautiful visit to a unique place.
